Welcome to the Cannabis Center of Excellence's latest research initiative, focusing on the intersection of environmental sustainability and social justice within the cannabis industry of North-East USA and Canada. This pivotal study, conducted from September 2020 to July 2021, delves deep into the practices of cannabis businesses in relation to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Understanding the Research Scope and Methodology


The CCOE, in collaboration with its partners, spearheaded this survey-based research to gauge the awareness and implementation of CSR within the regulated cannabis industry. Key aspects of our methodology included:

  • Survey Distribution: Utilizing Survey Monkey to reach a diverse range of cannabis businesses.
  • Wide Range of Participants: Data was collected from various cannabis license types, with a focus on cultivators.
  • Robust Data Analysis: The responses were meticulously analyzed using R statistical software.

Principal Findings of the Study:


  1. Awareness vs. Action on CSR: Despite high awareness of CSR among the industry players, less than half have formalized their commitment to enhancing environmental and social behavior.
  2. Business Types and Demographics: The survey saw participation from 66 businesses, predominantly from cultivation, with most respondents being owners or in high-level management.
  3. CSR Commitments and Practices: Those committed to CSR were primarily in cultivation, emphasizing practices like water and energy efficiency, diverse hiring, and organic processes.
  4. Plans for Business Expansion: Reflecting an industry in growth, over 75% of respondents indicated plans to expand their operations in the coming year.
  5. Geographic Reach: The study covered 21 US states and 7 Canadian provinces, with a notable concentration of businesses in Massachusetts.
  6. Sustainability and Equity Concerns: Major concerns highlighted included issues related to packaging waste, energy usage, and management of cultivation waste.
  7. Climate Change Adaptation: Businesses are actively preparing for climate-related challenges, adopting various sustainable practices to mitigate risks.
